Accessing Healthcare

You may get worried about what to expect when you go to hospital or GP appointments. There is extra support to make you feel more comfortable if you need it.

When you have an appointment, there are some things you can do to help yourself feel ready:

  • Chat about what might happen with family, friends or a health professional.
  • Read through any letters from the hospital or doctor’s surgery– you could ask someone to help you with this. You can ask the health care provider for letters to be adjusted to meet your needs.
  • Have a health passport ready – this will help you tell the hospital staff what reasonable adjustments you need.
  • Write down any questions that you already know you would like to ask so that you don't forget them.

You have a right to ask for reasonable adjustments to be made to make you feel more comfortable during your appointment, so don’t feel worried about calling ahead to check that the hospital know what you need.
