A cold is caused by a virus and can last for five to seven days, although you might have a cough which can hang around for longer.

You do not normally need to see a GP with a common cold. You can usually self-care at home or speak to a pharmacist for advice on over the counter medication. If your symptoms do not get better after three weeks, or if they suddenly get worse, you should see a GP.
